Artificial Intelligence: Are People Going to Lose Their Jobs?

As artificial intelligence, or AI, becomes more ubiquitous in our daily lives, it's natural to wonder what role this cutting-edge technology will play in society. As AI technology becomes more prevalent in society, people worry that it will take the place of human workers.

Some people see AI technologies as a threat because they are afraid of how much ground AI is quickly gaining in different industries. They worry that machines will eventually take over jobs usually done by humans. Will it end up replacing human beings entirely, or simply help us become better versions of ourselves?

For the past thirty years, AI researchers have shown that machines can surpass human intelligence. However, this higher intellect doesn't translate to machine sentience--and that's at the core of “the man vs. machine” argument. Machines can't think for themselves and therefore can never do better than humans on a broad scale, or come up with new "ideas" beyond their programming.

Automating with AI has deeper economic consequences than just taking over a job that nobody wants. The effects of automation are not all positive--there is also a greater chance for bias in fields such as medicine, insurance, and real estate. By having a human augmenting the AI technology, we can keep those biases at bay. It's vital that people maintain control.

Although it's possible that jobs in the future will be replaced by artificial intelligence, this is not likely to happen for most positions. It's more probable that certain tasks within a position will become automated, making workers more efficient and particular jobs easier.

A study by McKinsey Global Institute found that today’s AI technology automates less than 5 percent of jobs worldwide, but it could augment nearly 30 percent of tasks across 60 percent of occupations.

It is also foreseen that Industry 4.0, also known as the fourth industrial revolution, is most likely going to happen and do more good than harm. Most people believe that this new industrial revolution will result in mass job loss but, like those before it, will create more jobs overall.

We do not have to worry about AI replacing the human workforce. Instead of worrying about machines taking our jobs in the future, we should focus on filling the roles we have now. There's always room for more work, so let's everyone do our part to contribute to society.
